Except most standard Dana diffs don't have drain plugs unless you fit aftermarket covers or modify the existing ones.
Apparently this is so that the cover has to be removed to do an oil change and in turn crown wheel bolts can be checked for tightness at the same time.

True, and I would always remove the cover anyway to clean out the sludge which wouldn't drain properly otherwise.

I wouldn't have noticed a broken tooth on a front spider gear, or a piece of shim floating around, with just a drain plug.

My diff covers have never had magnets and I wondered what this clip was for, not mentioned in the manual.

Now I know, and I'll have to fit one.

I can understand why there is no drain plug in the covers but in a 4wd they are a necessity as if subject to water ingress during a creek or river crossing it might be necessary to change the oil, having to take the cover off on the side of the road is a PITA.
Never mind impact damage on the front one from rocks and boulders in rough terrain, the first time I ever drove the Oka off road I dented the cover back against the crown wheel, looked a bit like the inside of yours actually ;-))

Yes, our Oka had a "diff event" before we bought it.

You could drill though the diff cover bolt hole (in yellow), as an occasional side-of-the-road drain hole. Need to drill a smaller diameter than the bolt thread so the bolt can be reused (with copious gasket goo).

But is this a drain slot (red arrow) that's been cut? Not on our front diff.

Either would allow most of the water to drain out if necessary

The option to make a "drain hole plug" via the threaded drill hole as indicated by David is interesting.
Considering all your input I might just replace the broken magnetic ring with a magnetic plug at the filling hole. I assume as well that the diff oil is sloshing around so much that the filing7glitter would be still collected there.

Thank you and best regards

OIA, the position of your magnet was above the filler plug anyway, so it relied on oil sloshing around to collect iron filings.

So a magnetic filler plug should work just as well.
