Has anyone fitted a baby capsule on the engine hatch or know anyone who has had it done?
Be good to find an engineer in Brisbane who could certify one.

Peter, I did this ten years ago but never took any photos. Well not exactly me; I gave the Oka to a company that specialises in building rally cars, Maximum Motorsport, for the sole purpose of fitting a baby capsule to the engine hatch, and they had no hesitation about it all. It was done to specifically suit the capsule we had, not a generic fit.

The most obvious modification was a vertical bar fitted at the back of the cab, or more correctly at the front of the bus body. It was bolted in top and bottom into nuts welded into the frames, not unlike seatbelt mounting points. The bar carried the clip that the forward straps attached to, above the capsule.

There were locating bumpers fitted to the engine cover at three or four points, and the capsule went over them and was held down by an additional seatbelt strap - but I can't remember how that was done. Anyway Maximum Motorsport are obviously in the business of keeping seats and people in situ in much more spectacular incidents than most Okas will ever see, so I was completely confident that what they did would be as good as you could get. They're the kind of people I would be seeking out to get the job done in Brisbane too.

Just a note to say that OKA196 has a mounting system for a baby capsule (Cat 2, max seated height of child 760mm from memory) on the engine cover.
Quite simple actually.
It has been approved by an engineer in Brisbane.
With some luck, I will be able to post some pics and a description at a later date and also the name of the engineer (if he wants that to happen).

The 2 seats at the rear of the camper section (that I had engineered, but not sought approval for when I built the body) are now also approved.

So, we are a 5 seater.

It is not something you "buy". It has to be built.
Not too complicated though but will need an engineer to approve it.
OKA196 is having some work done on it at the mo, but when it is back I will get some pics and post them.

Yes. It is at Saint Marys Auto.
The child seat is not in it at the mo, but all 'mods' for mounting it are all there.
I will be picking it up from there on Monday sometime or you could call into home at some time later to have a look.
....But I thought you were in NT?

Thanks Peter, I am in the NT. Just I have used the guys at St Mary`s before with your recommendation. Top guys and went way beyond what they had to. Working back late etc etc. At the end of the bill was quite reasonable as well.
David,
Thanks for the info, is this all seats are just a few??

Should be all OKA rear seats. there will be a hole with brass ring, just fit a standard floor / Roof child restraining mount and bolt in.

From memory (last job before retirement) any small (less than 15 seat) busses/people carriers/vans etc registered in NSW since about 2000 must have baby seat mounts fitted to the rearmost seats in the two outboard seating postions. Depending on the seats themselves the mounts can be fitted to the seats, frames or the floor behind them, depends on the engineer involved.
