Hey there Holmz,
I understand that welding cast iron may be problematic due to heat stresses. I'm reluctant because I don't want to have to take it all apart again if I can avoid it.
Indeed I had similar thoughts about some tube bent up to replace the cast iron unit.
I think the first point of call is to price some new cast units. If the price is right then it saves on a lot of hassle. I already have a price for a second hand unit and have made some enquiries on a new unit. A tractor supplier I spoke to immediately knew the engine was out of an OKA as soon as I provided the engine number. He thinks he has a dump pipe on the shelf so I should get an idea tomorrow.
I suppose it's then a matter of weighing up the pros and cons.
I think wrapping the manifolds is a good idea. Perfect time to do it.
Alan.

Header wrap is easy, but cast manifolds... well not so much so... hence the ceramic coating.
How much are the new and used ones?

Indeed,
I got a quote on a used one for $250+GST+freight. I have absolutely no idea what they're worth - whether they're $50 or $500 new. If a new unit is higher then the second hand is the way to go.
Unless of course someone on the forum may have one sitting on shelf somewhere...
Fingers remain crossed.

Hi Alan,
The dump pipe is not so bad as you may be able to weld. Vince being a welder said that you can use stainless to weld but how good are you.
When Vince replaced his turbo his manifold had a bad crack just above the turbo fitting and it went almost all around anyway he got a new one from nordemans who is a perkins agent for around $150.00 so not worth welding, so 250 for dump pipe seems high for 2nd hand.
I would think there would be one out there with all the transplants, wait and see.

Heheh, I think my answer to your welding stainless question would have to be, "I don't know how good I am at it".
I've never tried so I don't think this would be a good time to try.
Agreed, I'm hoping someone does have one but it's not looking good so far.

Heat up with oxy first till it just starts to look a bit red, then weld with stainless stick or buy nickel rods (better and expensive but not $250 for second hand expensive!) then allow to cool slowly preferably in sand or lime.
Should be able to pick one up from a tractor or truck wrecker somewhere... barring that just weld up a piece of pipe, cheap and simple.
cheers, alister
