I have been using LSA (Lubrication Systems Australia) 15W40 Diesel Ultra (semi synthetic) engine oil in the Perkins for 15 years. I most recently paid $115 for 20L. Probably suitable for other diesel engines too.
LSA are currently selling it over the counter for $90/20L drum.

Typically 10,000km (occasionally shorter for convenience between trips).
No additives.

I was blowing through oil at a pretty fierce rate, and on the change put in some redline, and the consumption rate dropped to a litre in 2000km.
So I suspect that the LSA is a good way to go too., and certainly a much better value.

Redline does do a zinc/phosphorus additive (breaking lube) that adds back in the stuff that has been lacking for the cam and lifters... if one is overly concerned about those parts.
