Hi, im hoping someone can help me out here.

Last night i decided to check the oil level in preparation for heading down to Albany this weekend, i have purchased some oil that was recommended by Robin Wade Fuchs Monograde 30W
Anyway, the dipstick stop/seal is missing the top cap and the bottom plate is loose where the rubber is meant to stop, so the rubber slides up and down. I can hold it where it should be in between where the top and bottom retaining plate should be and the oil lever was about 20mm below the bottom level mark on the dipstick.

I proceed to add oil in 500ml at a time x 3 times (1.5L) the level is still below the line? As the engine only takes 8L i am wondering if the level was very low when i picked it up because the dipstick was all the way in to the hook bend at the top when i first looked at it.

How much do you normally have to top it up after a 1000kms?

The Dipstick number XC-7A020-A matches a ford dipstick part XC7A020A without the dashes. Pic attached.

This part looks ame on Ebay .

Thinking about it, I wonder if this has been a made up dipstick from an Auto Transmission ford Dipstick? The Groove marks for upper and lower look like they have been done with a hacksaw.?

Shane, I had the very same question recently.

My dipstick is 65.5cm from the bottom of the handle (top of the tube) to the tip, but I've always suspected that it reads too low, ie the actual oil level is lower than the dipstick notches suggest.

I think the sump takes a lot more than 8l, especially with a new filter. I buy a 10litre container and use nearly all of it.

This may be old news but I always pre-fill my filter before fitting it and then spin the engine with out it starting until the oil pressure comes up to avoid undue load on unlubricated bearings (by disconnecting the wire to the cut off solenoid on the injector pump). I fitted a switch for that purpose, it prevents the engine from starting and is also an emergency engine cut off if the key doesn't work or the passenger has to do it.

I rarely have to top up my oil between changes, it just doesn't use any, except for leaks. I guess that's not entirely true but it wouldn't use more than a litre over 6-8000km. I occasionally give it 1/2 litre because I think it deserves some, not because it needs it.

Thanks Dave, it would be nice to be confident to accurately read level so it can be topped up. My understanding is these types of engines will use some oil as part of their operation and they need to be topped up every 500 or 1000 kms.
I bought 20L and will keep a 5L on hand to top up with.

Is that the original dipstick that came with your OKA? My suspicion that the one i have is a made up one might be correct, the dipstick is at the back passenger side on this engine, is that the case on yours?

Shane, I don't know if mine dipstick is original, I've see other different designs. Maybe someone else will measure there's and we can compare notes.

The manual show this design. Item 26 is part number 3178C122 (which is a Perkins dipstick number if you Google it):

Alan at Oka Parts might measure one for you.

I rarely have to top up my oil between changes, it just doesn't use any, except for leaks. I guess that's not entirely true but it wouldn't use more than a litre over 6-8000km. I occasionally give it 1/2 litre because I think it deserves some for getting us there and back, not because it needs it.

My engine is not the original fitted so I don't now how old it is. It was built in 1995 (our Oka is a 94) so it was probably fitted in the late 90's and may have done 3-400,000km. We've done 120,000km in it and it was a hard working tour bus before that.

Haha ok my bad.... I didn't see the other dipstick and I've been checking the power steering. Silly bugger ...

Engine Oils a bit high now I'll drop some out. Then I'll too the hydraulics up.

:-) sorry

I'll say it before anyone else does " Dipstick" haha
