On all other vehicles i've owned you fill the diff until the oil flows from the fill hole. Dana 70 specs says 3L of oil but this amount doesn't flow from hole. What is correct? 3L only or fill 'er up?

Russell
The amount of oil will depend on whether you have an open diff or an LSD.
The LSD will take less oil because it has 4 spider gears instead of 2, and the carrier is more massive and takes up more space.
You should fill to the oil plug hole.

On a similar note - given that the rear wheel bearings are quite adequately lubricated by the level in the rear diff. why (apart from the fact that the diff is upside down)does the oil level in the front diff need to be 50mm higher.

Tony, I don't think it does and just leads to more oil seeping past the inner seals. Up to the level of the bottom of the axle tube should be sufficient, just like the rear.

Great minds think alike.

I went to a lot of trouble getting the tubes spotless and doing everything right when I changed the inner axle seals (which were leaking badly after a lot of time driving through deep mud-soup in the Simpson and down the Birdsville Highway), only to find a slight seepage reoccurring after a few weeks of normal driving.

Reduced the oil level and the seepage stopped.

Tony those heavy duty diff covers I got over in the US which have filler and drain plugs, the front filler plug is actually lower than the rear by about the correct amount.

The standard D60 front diff cover is actually an upside down rear cover and therefore creates a much higher level than is supposed to be. That's from talking to Robin Wade. Apparently having the higher than standard level does cause seepage as you say...

The rear isn't upside down and should be filled to the filler plug hole.

Cheers, Alister

I bought this this one and also a Dana 60 one as well.
They don't appear to have them on ebay any more with that seller though.
