from Pete Fox:
Hi
I have just got a price on some Michelin 285/70R 19.5's and nearly fell over. $ 840 in Kalgoorlie.
I have found some Hankook 305/70R 19.5's that are the same pattern as the Michelins at about half the price. Problem is that 266 has 7.5" rims and 8" rims are specified for 305's.
Has anybody fitted 305's to the 7.5" rims? Before I do this are there any issues with this?
For the money asked by Michelin it would be nearly as cheap to go to 16" alloys and comfortable tyres.

from Peter_n_Margaret:
The approved rim size for the Michelin 305/R70s is 8 1/4'' or 9'' and Michelin recommend 8 1/4''.
They would be technically illegal on 7 1/2'' rims.

That's one of the reasons we went to alloys, BIG price difference and also BIG weight difference. Never had a problem with the alloys. See Chris's entry in forums re his new wheels.

An update on 305 70 R19.5 tyres.
After a whole lot of procrastinating, it came to in the end, the old decision maker i.e. price.
I settled on Hankook 305's (DH05). These look the same as the Michelin XDE's, but are non-directional as far as I can see. I have had a good run from Hankooks before so I ordered five.

The best part was the price. Bought off eBay for $435 ea. here . This is half the price of Michelins and a lot less than any other tyre I could find.
I originally thought they might have been old new stock, but the ones I got were dated week 24, 2011.
These may suit other members not wanting to outlay big dollars.

Pete,
I have these tyres fitted to my OKA on 7.5 rims. No trouble after 30k+ km.
Two were new on the truck when I purchased it and I bought two more soon after for the rear. Think I paid about $550 ea fitted at local tyre dealer. They are wearing well i think. But as others have done I will be looking at the 16 inch alloy wheel/ tyre combos when these wear out.

Peter,
We've had 305/70 R19.5 Bridgestones on 7.5" rims on #413 for around 30,000 Km with no problems what so ever. From highway cruising at 100 Km/hr at 50 psi to CSR sand driving at 20 psi to Anne Beadel Highway corrugations there have been no issues.
