NP205 - 23 spline question

The NP205 has the 23 spline input shaft, it looks new as does the coupler piece. What is the issue with this spline setup, wear or breakage? Specifically what would the upgraded splined shaft be out of?
If I were to change the shaft, what is involved and who has the parts? US sources? Part numbers?
Also the Spicer has the ID plate replaced with one that says " remanufactured by Spicer". Would this be an Oka warranty job done way back or a more recent replacement. Speedo of donor vehicle has only 160k but it was a cable layer for a power company so I presume a lot of low range work. Any ideas for how long Spicer did the rebuilding? I'm just trying to work out the likely condition of the box.

Joe should be able to help with this one.
Also I think Rob did the upgrade when he put the Cummins and Allison in.
I have something similar here. NP205 and Spice with adapters etc. I am thinking of using the NP205 instead of the Rockwell.

The issue is not the splines, but the needle rollers!!
Laçk of use in low range causes the needle rollers to chatter away in 1 spot & when finnally engaged the rollers are oval & imbeded in shaft.
If you can jiģgle rear output, the n,rollers are us,
thus the input is dancing about & the result is broken input,
OKA,s fix!! Bigger shaft fix problem not cause.
27 sp, 2500 if you can find one, OKA special
29 sp dodge but need bore case, housing & respline coupler.
joe & P K are the blokes to speak to

The 29 spline shaft I put in from memory was www.quad4x4.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=acton&key=10566
All I needed to do was machine the housing out about 10mm to take the bigger bearing and also the adaptor housing to take the bigger seal. I then got another adaptor machined at a place called gear concern in Brisbane. I'm about to work out a price for all of my parts that I didn't use to put the Allison in.
For anybody considering doing an Allison conversion the Allison output shaft is 29 spline as well so with the 29 spline shaft in the np205 it's a straight 29 to 29 coupler.

Brett, no doubt you are right and have presumably suffered a broken input shaft.
But how common is a broken input shaft from this problem and how much "jiggle" is too much on the output shaft?
As per this thread , I have 1mm up/down movement at the handbrake drum. Is this too much or fairly normal?
Pete, I replaced my 27 spline input shaft with a new one a couple of years ago, plus a s/h coupler (RH in pic) with less wear. These took away most of the input shaft clanking.
The splines on both were pretty worn and I doubt they would have survived many more treks before the splines stripped completely, leaving us stranded with no drive:

when stripped, needle rollers were dust, lack of use =lack of lube.
#091 23 sp 13 years 7 ton spray truck, over half in low & still going
eg, many km to Simpson in Hi range, n/roll not turning, not lubed, half flat!! now work hard for 300 KM
every day use in low range to rotate n/r's keeps NP205 healthy!!
get rid of useless p/brake helps to

Got mine from Paul a few years ago but even then he found they were expensive items to keep in stock

what I had found with the 23 splines shafts is that they were the first specks from OKA,the touring buses were the first to suffer failure, the second interesting thing was that when I got hardness test done on the coupling were different in hardness to the 27 spline coupling,I only had one of each checked so can't tell you if it was the common or the one off,if your shaft and coupling are not showing signs of excessive wear by having excessive play the life of the gear will still be ok,I have going over to the 29 splines now just because the 27 splines are no longer available and the cost is prohibiting to be manufactured here and all the changes needed to fit the 29 splines are within a reasonable cost, other thing to consider is if you are planing extra HP like a 6BT,personally a 29 splines for a Cummins is a must (DODGE found this out years ago),I may have forgotten some other points call me on 0419322443 if you think of anything.
Cheers,Joe
