Thanks Ewart.

I've been testing various video upload processes and most work OK except for Photobucket, which is annoying since that's where most of my photos and some of my videos are hosted.

My preference is Vimeo but YouTube works fine too and their processing is faster.

I've written up some notes on linking videos in the Community/Videos menu here .

I've linked quite a few videos there, plus a few from Hal, but unfortunately we can't currently upload videos from our own computers, only those hosted by Vimeo, YouTube, Flickr etc (but not, it seems Photobucket), which makes it a more complex 2 step process. Direct uploading is a possibility using a remote processing service, which James is working on.

You can upload (or link) videos via the forums (Attachments or Link the url) but they don't then show up in the videos section. I'm still working on this. Right now in Adelaide it's 44ยบ, so there's not much I can do outside.

This is an "Image link" to a video.

Alternative is a direct link..

The links provided were working, however asking me to sign up with photobucket,
do I need an account to watch?
The picture link worked instantly without signing in.
I tested with iphone 4.

Is it already possible to set up a personal page with infos,
pictures OKA 327?

Thank you and best regards

OiA, you shouldn't need to register with Photobucket to view the above links, they are public, but you do need to register to make comments on them.

You can set up a photo album for Oka 327 in the Community/Photos section and upload your photos (see the How to upload notes). I have recovered your photos from the old website (12 of them) but if I upload them, they are then owned by me, and you wouldn't be able to add to the album or edit it.

If you don't have the photos you previously uploaded, I can email them to you for you to re-upload.

The same applies to anyone else whose photos I haven't re-uploaded. Check the photos section.

If there's a photo album in your name, it's because I logged in as you to upload photos on your behalf and they are now fully owned by you. However, I can't do that where members have changed their passwords since the site was set up.

That is ideally done at www.oka4wd.com/members-vehicles - you can include as much information as you want there and edit as required.

David, all the Photobucket links above worked on an iPad. All opened in a new tab and Peter's picture link started playing automatically.

Good morning David,
Using my HTC phone the above link of yours works fine as does Peters but when I go into community and to all videos the only one of yours that I can open is mvi 8262 enh stab. Both the videos from Hal work fine. I also tried briefly with my iPad last night but had the same results.

Ewart that is weird.

All the videos work for me (using Safari on a Mac) when I log in as a test user, not just as an admin. I'll need to do some more research. Does anyone else share Ewart's experience with videos from the Community/Videos section?

You may note that the the mvi 8262 video that worked for you is exactly the same as the "Camels on the Great Central Road" video, except that the first was linked from YouTube and the second from Vimeo. Both sources are approved video providers for our Videos application.

However there may be an explanation. Some devices (such as Apple iPhones and iPads) may not allow Flash objects, which is how most movies are presented, but the mvi 8262 movie is in HTML5 format which might explain your situation. (Hal might add something here, being an iPad user).

As I understand it, movies being opened on current iPads will request and present the the HTML5 version in lieu of the Flash version. HTML5 is progressively replacing Flash but both will be around for a long time.

Can you also try a computer other than your iPad? Can you open movies direct from YouTube and Vimeo?

Thanks David

Dear David, dear Hal,

thanks again for your input. I have tested the "community/photos" section and uploaded some information to the "members vehicles" section. It seems to work fine and my video stored in my dropbox website is accessible via link.

It looks like it is possible to select who is able to see my information in the "community/photos" section but not in the "members vehicles" section? It would be nice to make my "members vehicles" post accessible to the public so I can send the link to non-OKA friends. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks for all the website admins work you do! Working in Cambodia it's the only way for me to stay in touch with my baby in South Africa.

Thank you and best regards

Just tried it now on the iPad David, which does not support Flash and won't in the foreseeable; and the 'camels' one comes up as a black screen with no explanation, while the '8262' one plays fine. Both play on the PC, as you'd expect.

True for both iPad original and iPad 2. We don't have anything newer.

Thanks Hal, I suspected that was the explanation but I don't know the solution. I was going to buy myself an iPad too...

Can you try the Camels video direct from Vimeo on your iPad?

It's alleged to be an HTML5 movie, as Vimeo have changed over from Flash to HTML5. However maybe the linking code I used still refers back to their Flash version.

Yes, clicking directly on to your link in the last post via iPad has it play correctly.

Don't worry, same result on an iPhone (an old one, but ios6) as an old iPad, which was to be expected.

OiA, you certainly get around.

Yes, theoretically the Members Vehicles section of the Forum could be made available to the public but that would mean the everyones members vehicle entries would be open to the public. That might not be generally acceptable.

What we would not want to do is to open any forum section for public posting or replies though. If you've seen other forums that are fully open, you'll have seen some of the rubbish/abuse/offensive material that gets posted, (like comments under YouTube videos).

I'll see if specific users can make their own posts public, or at least visible to specific people, but I'm not sure it can be done.

Hal, James, I understand OiA's situation. Probably the easiest and safest way is to allow OiA's friends/family members to become site members then access is provided but controlled. A win-win?

That is certainly what I want.

No, not really what we're after - like Peter 196 I use my vehicle page link as part of a signature on other sites, so that any random can click on it, have a glance and move on - and those people aren't going to be bothered signing up.

Just for the record I've had my mobile number and email address publicly available for years on the old site, and it's never been a problem. Spam filters are much better now than they were a few years ago. I enjoy the very few phone calls I get and they've always been to do with OKAs. I understand it's not for everybody, but I can say the concern issue is over-rated.

Maybe we have to do two forum headers like we had on the old site. 'Members Vehicles - Public' (randoms) and 'Members Vehicles - Private' (logged in members only)?
