Hello, Can anyone tell me please how much oil a 160 Perkins should hold? I have searched the net and elsewhere, but there seems to be no info available. Even the Perkins workshop manual only says "Fill to mark on dipstick". But I don't have the original dipstick.....

Thanks, Paul

Paul, sump capacity seems to be determined by the application/vehicle the engine is in, rather than engine model.

The best I could find ( a 160HP in a boat ) is 8-10 US Quarts (7.5-9.5 litres), Which is about the same as the 4 cylinder Perk.

If the oil level has been OK, drain the sump and measure how much comes out. That will give you a clue as to how much to replace it with (plus a bit for losses), but probably a litre or so will still be around the engine so it's not an exact science.

Thanks David,
Yes, it does seem to be application specific. I drained 16 litres out, which is a LOT more than I expected. Very nearly had a nasty upset on my floor - my drainer was full to the brim. I expected maybe around 12 litres, 50% more than the 4 cylinder.
I know that too much oil can be nearly as bad as too little - crankshafts whizzing through the oil can aerate it and make it less effective. Wish I knew more....

Paul the Phaser 6 set at 180hp was fitted in the last of the Bedford Trucks model TL.
I know the 6354 model held 21 pints if thats any help,
Also don't let the crank hit the oil when its turning you could end up with a very expensive repair.

Cheers Dave

Hi Paul,
The reason that there is no info in manual is because there is a number of sumps and 1 or 2 filters and any combination.
The 4 and 6 fill up to the same level no matter the sump or filter combination so you can use the dip stick from the 4 cylinder and either mark down from the top or just swap over but make sure that the tube is the same length from where it fixes to the block to the top where the stick goes in if not just compensate for the difference.
Fill to the mark and measure what goes in for next time.
Dave may be right with 21 pints but is it the same size sump in yours.

HI Paul
I have been out of touch of late but we are still above ground and I have recently acquired a 6 cyl Phaser and am hoping I can pick your brains on a few things about fitting it into the Oka .
