Upper steering column

Getting odd knocking noises from the upper sc on certain bumps...since all the lower parts are recently refurbished they get a clean pass...so out she comes and the bearings are horribly grindy sounding...but alas no supplier has any source of the lower roller bearing, a type DG20...see pic...any leads here appreciated (Paul and Ian don't have)....

And while we're at it....the Lucas switch and key housing that bolts to the column has a plastic sleeve in the centre...it is loose and rattles...does it perform any function other than a liner coz I intend to slap some sika on it to stop is rattling....

Cheers all!

Can't help with the bearings but the plastic sleeves are what cause the rattling on rough roads I've been told, never had mine apart to have a bo peep.

The top bearing is a commonly available "6805" - sorted. The lower one is unobtanium DG20, so I am forced to clean and regrease it then refit it. The rattling plastic sleeve in the Locas upper switch housing is now secured with silicone goop. On driving the whole effect is markedly improved. However if that lower bearing should let go there must be some machining to accomodate something more readily available...or else a complete steering column and switchgear transplant...

I would have thought that a bearing with what seems like standard sizing would have been easy to source.
DG20 is listed as being 40mm OD, 20mmID and 25mm wide which seems pretty standard to me.
Remember too that the steering column is out of a Leyland Terriier truck, which is same as a DAF apparently.
The boots for the steering column wands are a Lucas part and the last set I bought were listed for a JCB tractor on ebay.

I'll likely chase that bearing more diligently some other time when I don't need to have it drivable for a week or so....

The Lucas switch 'base' that the wiper and indicator switches attach to is Lucas 54310955....so I punched it into a search and just one hit came back...strangely it's in a UK town where my Sister lives! So She's picking it up for me...12 UK quid....I've no immediate need for it but, hey, got one spare now....

Apparently Leyland, who made the steering column, moved to India.

www.ashokleyland.com/

I had a look at the images for the company and recognised some of the trucks I drove in the UK back in the 80s and 90s.
These had the same steering column as the OKA.
If all else fails looking for parts maybe contact these guys.

The Oka part number is 007238 for the lower bearing. AAU6253 I think is the Leyland DAF reference.

good luck, Keith

Hi Dane - the bearing (see pic) is back in until it isn't. In the parts manual it has a number but the bearing isn't shown exploded out of the upper steering assembly. Mudgee bearings have no idea what it is when I took it in to show them. Does the ones you're referring to look like this? Plastic thing with splines on the outer and rollers inside?

I'm overseas until May so it's not a major hurry and the old one, once washed out and re-greased is doing OK but will be nice to have one ready to go in.

Hey Dane, well wow! That looks like it.

Well you did 100% better than Mudgee bearings.

How do I get my hands on one of these?

As I said, I'm not back in Straya until May so there's no rush.

Thanks again for chasing this.

Dave
