Thought I'd check the cab mounts as part of diagnosing poor ride quality....yikes! Both sides mount bolts turn by hand....

But wait there's more....

Looking at the drawing it appears there are only mounts at the SC cab rear....can this be true....can't see any forward cab mounts underneath or on drawing....can someone here help this dullard understand if and how this can be?

The box section that runs across the front of the cab that the mounts are attached to is prone to rusting out which would mean that the front is free to move more than necessary. Apart from two tiny drain holes it's virtually sealed at each end by the body sheet. that's why you see rust below the side indicator lights at the bottom of the front doors, I ran the step drill into the ends of 374 years ago and fitted large rubber grommets which allowed me to clean out the inside of that square section and regularly apply fish oil to the interior.

Great idea, Peter, I will copy your design and feel ashamed that I didn't think of it years ago!

Thanks for the tip I'll drill holes likewise....thankfully 297 was in a dry shed for 22 years so there is zero rust anywhere....so far that is...

Today's comedy begain quite lowkey having easily cut the seized cab mount bolt on the Pax side and replaced it. But then I moved to repeat the feat on the driver side...pah! The Cummins air filter and a bunch of cables I'd run in the compartment completely obscurred access to the cab mount....so, out with the air filter...but could I reach the hose clamp fixings? Nope!

Easy answer was to cut an access hole into the compartment from behind the driver seat...now I can remove the clamps and hoses attaching to the filter...side benefit it allows very open access to the various air hoses and cables etc...so will place a hatch behind the seat with rivnuts all around so it won't be a pain to service the cab mounts...

The front cab mounts require the radiators to be removed and some pipework too....so will save this for a few months when I plan to get the rad out and fix a small leak....will likey also relocate the dreaded heater tap...

While you are playing with the heater tap either replace the accelerator cable as it resides beside the heater tap and is just as accessible or put some thought into running it parallel to where it is on the drivers side of the tunnel in the foot well.
Those of us without a clutch pedal have plenty of room for the left foot and could sacrifice the small space required for it to run inside the cab and out into the engine bay at the rear of the footwell as it would only need a small duct to cover it and then the cable could easily be replaced whne required.

....another good call but I think Kelvin ran the control elsewhere I'll need to check...

I wonder how others manage to maintain access to their cab mounts, if at all?

Yes I did point out to him a few things to do while there was no engine in your truck and mods that most had done plus what was necessary with the Cummins and Allison. Paul and Ian also did the same.

I cranked up the rear cab mount bolts 2 days ago and went to inspect today....they're failing as they;ve developed cracks in the sides and the pre-load has come off the nuts by quite a bit. I wonder if the cab mounts can be replaced without actually lifting the cab off....perhaps I can jack it up a few mm and slide out the old ones?

I reckon you would be safe doing that just keep and eye on stuff in the engine bay that is mounted to the body and connects to the chassis like wiring harness fuel lines etc , The radiator hoses at the front and intake ducting would be the big ones.

I have a sneaking suspicion they are from something else, I'd speak to Ian or Paul, Dean as a last resort.
Or ask on the forum/farcebook if anyone knows what they'r off. It would either be something like alandrover or japanese truck.
