Looking through the archives I found areference from Tony Abe of Esperence on 8 august 2010 that refered to a small gear breakage fitted to one of the narrow hand brake drum units. I thought that all of the rockwells were identical inside, at least that is what I was told by a person that used to repair both Intnational and OKA boxes. I have the narrow brake transfercase in mine and would be interested to find which is the gear fitted to this box.
I have been advised to replace the box with a NP205, however divorced NP205's are hard to find and the prospect of spending $10,000, plus the cost of modifying the prop shafts is beyond what I am prepared to spend. Not to mention that in order to properly align the rear shaft the gearbox needs to be lowered and the rear axle taper shimmed, the problem is then transferred to the front because then the front axle pinion will be out of alignment, because if you shim the axle then the castor angle will be off.
I have just finished overhauling my transfer case and in the process of hunting down another box to use as a spare, between the two of them, they should see me out. By the way I was quoted $15,000 for a new HD150 NT and $7500 for a recon box plus another $7000 for the rest of the parts to complete the conversion, talk about over capitalizing.
So if anyone knows about this smaller gear and how much needs to to be replaced internally I would apreciate the first hand knowledge.

Hi Frank
I have 2 Rockwells. 1 for parts the other was running ok when I replaced it with a NP205. I would like to sell both of them together will about 15 liters of the recommended Castrol oil. I think you are in South Aust and I am in Sydney, if so I might be abe to work something out with the freight. If you are interested in them let me know.
Cheers Peter

Yes would be interested, depending on price and condition. When you say you have the correct Castrol oil, is it a GL4 80W90 or something else. How much if any movement is there when you try rocking the brake drum up and down with the brake shoes adjusted in for maximum clearance, and how easily does the brake flange slide off the splined shaft. How many kilometers has the box done and is it the narrow 1.5" or 3" width drum. As for freight it should easily fit on a quarter pallet size. Out of interest how is the NP205 conversion going and are you noticing any problems with the front drive shaft misalignment, or do you rarely use it in 4WD mode and do you have freewheeling hubs fitted.

Frank
