G’day all,
Has anyone had the 5 speed spicer rebuilt?
I’ve dropped the box out today as part of the rebuild of OKA 251, and found the input shaft has a fair amount of play. Paul Nott tells me the main shaft bearing will need replacing at least.

I’ve also noticed a slight wear mark on 5th gear as shown in the pic below. It’s only on one tooth, so not sure if it’s something to be concerned about yet? Any ideas how big an issue this is? It’s a damn expensive option to go with a new (Old Stock) gearbox. So wanting to know of anywhere in Perth that could rebuild it.

I've ended up deciding to go with a New (Old Stock) Gearbox from East Coast Oka spares and repairs. An expensive option for sure, as they are becoming rarer than hens teeth. Lack of parts availability is the main problem with rebuilding these, there is another option of a geabox that has been rebuilt using parts from other used OKA Spicer boxes. I'd prefer to know it's all mickey mouse and something I won't have to worry about for awhile.

Down the track I may investigate going with an Allison or something like a Tremec TR-4050 5 speed manual. I guess that would be another can of worms and require some engineering of adapters and mounts etc.

It was a bit hard for him to tell from the pic, but he reckons with the Cummins, I’ll spend a lot of time in 5th gear, so if it was wearing now, it won’t get any better.

I might pull this box down myself one day in the future and have a real good look at all the gears. I’m not sure if it’s worth having the gears laser hardened or how viable/expensive that would be.

Cheers,
Steve
