2 years ago I had a problem with the Rockwell Transfer case where it was popping out of 4wd Low. As the problem got worse I finally ended up replacing the worn cogs ( with second hand ones as they where all I could fiind).
Now the same problem has started again - I was wondering what direction I need to take.
1 - Go through the same process and put new cogs in if they can be found
2 - Replace the transfer case with the NP205.
It seems you can buy new NP205's( www.offroaders.com/directory/products/LoMax-NP205.htm )
So A question that I have is - Does the NP205 bolt straight onto the back of the Spicer gearbox without much modification. I presume that as the Rockwell is remote mounted that the shaft would need to be altered ??
Finally I have PTO driven hydrolics off the Rockwell - Wound I loose this by changing to the NP205 ?
Has anyone done this ? or aware of the issues.
Many Thanks
Tim

Tim
I did a fair bit of research on this earlier this year when I had issues with 266.
Conversion to NP205 is an expen$ive option though a good one. there is an Oka specific adapter housing and coupler shaft required. To buy a rebuilt NP205 and the conversion gear you are looking at mega $. You will also have to consider the handbrake and speedo drive.
Paul Nott has the conversion gear and when I last spoke to him he had one shaft left and wasn't getting any more made.
you would probably have to consider a PTO for the Spicer and move the hydraulics to there.

Morning all,the 205 is a good box but the question is does it compare with the Nissan gu/gq box thatcomes from the Nissan 4wd trucks , triple chain drive and plentiful as they dont implode either and plenty of after market gears and adaptors from marks adaptors and as cheap as chips or free to a good home, inour neck of the woods. they are bullet proof and maybe as much underated as the 205 is overrated, I personally believe the 205 has been oversold, JB conversions in the USA cant deliver as they need 100 or 200 orders for gears before they can supply and it just got tooo hard. The spruikers of the attributes and suppliers of 205,s in Oz have built an expensive argument which at the price they are seeking renders them non competitive and out of touch with the reality of its competitors which is at least as strong andd durable , cheap and plentiful with aftermarket support. Just my take on this but then it always comes down to personal choice. The old forces of supply and demand dictate the price not the quality in this case

Yes I am starting to think in the same direction.
Is it a difficult process to adapt the Nissan T/C to the Spicer Gearbox ?

hi Tim, we have not delved into that area, but a few quick calls to Marks adaptors and Rodney at wholesale automatics in Melbourne should get some expert answers, they bend over backwards to help and very cluey and would steer you in the right direction to contacts .in the unlikely event that they not be able to shed light on the subject.Advance Adaptors are in sync with Marks adaptors and they have huge knowledge in this area of there expertise.Cheers all. Thanks Doc.
It looks like at this stage I am just going to replace cogs in the Rockwell (speed & cost factors) and start the process toward a replacement T/C so that when I do change over it may hopefully be a quicker change over. Thanks for the imput

Tim, just for general info - what was the mileage when it first happened two years ago and how many km did the secondhand gears last. How much low-range work are you doing etc etc?
Any extenuating circumstances that you are aware of

The milage was approx 130,000 and the 2nd hand Gears lasted about 30,000. I dont do alot of low range in terms of distance however I would engage Low Range a couple times a month usually under a fair weight load but not overloaded. Other than the use I think that the second hand gears must have been more worn that thought.

A good question Tim "why does a transfer case pop out of low range", but I haven't seen an answer to your question other than changing the box.

They normally jump out of gear with that transfer when the cables are out of adjustment and the throw is the wrong length and they are not fully in gear, hence they will come back out normally with a bang. Check the measurements by the manual.

Put in 4WD LOW. Should be 8mm gap between gear lever andcover panel. If not adjust attaching plate on transfer case. (from the book)
