Hello All!

We are a family of 4 who arrived in Australia a few months ago and quickly heard about OKAs from Holmz, which quickly caused our household to dream about getting one for adventuring while we are here. This forum has been incredibly helpful in teaching us about OKAs and the various issues we might encounter. While we've never had an RV before we've certainly done a bit of offroading.

Forum members, can you please help us? We’re on the hunt for an OKA to explore Australia with our 2 little boys (ages 6 and nearly 3). We will need at least 5 seats and while we’d prefer something that can sleep the boys separate from Mom and Dad, it’s not absolutely needed. We think that we could make a dual cab, multicab, or bus work depending on the set up. We’re looking for an OKA that is relatively reliable driver, and doesn’t need an immediate overhaul or refurbishment. We do recognize that owning an OKA means working on it to keep it in shape but we want to start travelling sooner rather than later. We definitely prefer something that has already upgraded some of the well known trouble spots.

Also, what tips do you guys have on what to look for given we’re a family of 4?

Thanks a bunch!

Gaz,

Thanks, I’ve been checking out gumtree for the last four months. We had a lead on one but the circumstances have changed about it and so the hunt begins again.

I was hoping to hear from folks who have some advice on what to think about when OKA’ing with two boys and see if any members are selling outside of gumtree. Thanks again and hope to see you off the road!

Sean

Hi Sean, welcome to the group! To fit the family, you will obviously need a minimum of a dualcab. They come in 3 or 4 seat versions (in the rear, 5 or 6 seats total), and with young kids the 100mm shorter XT dualcab might be fine (slightly cheaper too). I've seen someone put a fold out bunk above the seats and the other child slept on the seats in their dualcab with a camper section behind for cooking, sitting and parent accommodation. This could be done in any version really but i was impressed with the 'bunks' as they were quite space efficient.

As for the rest of the vehicle, it depends on what you want to do work wise on the vehicle and what setup you really want... and how much 4wding you want to do versus just very capable touring, there really is just so many options with them!

cheers, alister

ps. There used to be a 'for sale' section on the forum, don't know where it's gone now though, maybe someone else can help out here?

We're from the States but are living in Alice Springs currently. Really looking for the right OKA wherever we might find it.

Funny that you mention it, I just spoke to OKAPete yesterday for a good bit. He’s got a lead or two that were tracking down. I’ll give EC OKAs a ring when I get a chance. Thanks for the tip.
